Beautiful Creatures (2013) is a fantasy-romance film based on the first novel of the Caster Chronicles series by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. The story takes place in the small Southern town of Gatlin, where high school student Ethan Wate (Alden Ehrenreich) dreams of escaping his mundane life. His world changes when he meets Lena Duchannes (Alice Englert), a mysterious new girl with magical powers. Lena belongs to a family of Casters, individuals with supernatural abilities, and is approaching her sixteenth birthday when she will be “claimed” for either the Light or the Dark.

As Ethan and Lena grow closer, they uncover dark secrets about their families and the town itself. Lena struggles with the fear that she will be claimed by the Dark, a fate she is desperate to avoid. Meanwhile, powerful forces, including her Dark Caster mother, Sarafine (Emma Thompson), and cousin, Ridley (Emmy Rossum), attempt to sway her toward darkness. With time running out, Ethan and Lena must navigate love, fate, and the supernatural to determine Lena’s destiny. Beautiful Creatures combines elements of magic, romance, and Southern Gothic mystery in a story about choice and identity.
