The Reluctant Dragon (1941)
Humorist Robert Benchley sets out to find Walt Disney with the goal of pitching a story about a dragon who prefers poetry over fire-breathing and fighting. As Benchley tours the Walt Disney Studios, he meets various artists and animators who introduce him to the world of animation and the studio’s creative process. Throughout the visit, Benchley encounters different departments where sketches come to life and characters are brought from concept to screen.
During the tour, Benchley is introduced to the gentle dragon at the heart of the story, a creature more interested in reciting verse than scaring townsfolk. This dragon contrasts with typical fearsome dragons and offers a unique challenge for the filmmakers. The narrative balances the humorous realities of animation production with the charming idea of a dragon who is reluctant to embrace his fearsome reputation.
