In a dystopian future where the United States has become a totalitarian police state, convicted criminals are forced to participate in a brutal televised game show called The Running Man. Ben Richards (Arnold Schwarzenegger), a former police officer framed for a massacre he tried to prevent, is selected as the next contestant. To win his freedom, he must survive a deadly gauntlet of themed “Stalkers”—sadistic killers sent to hunt him down before a live audience.

As Richards fights for survival, he uncovers the truth behind the corrupt media machine and the lies used to control the population. With the help of underground resistance fighters and a woman who initially betrays him, he turns the game against its creators and becomes a symbol of rebellion against tyranny.
