The Toy (1982)
Unemployed writer Jack Brown (Richard Pryor) takes a job as a janitor at a department store owned by wealthy businessman U.S. Bates (Jackie Gleason). When Bates’s spoiled son Eric (Scott Schwartz) is allowed to choose anything in the store as a toy, he unexpectedly picks Jack. Reluctantly agreeing to the bizarre arrangement due to financial need, Jack moves into the Bates mansion and becomes Eric’s reluctant companion.
As the two spend time together, Jack learns about Eric’s loneliness and neglect, while Eric begins to see Jack as more than just a plaything. Their unlikely friendship challenges the wealthy family’s values and forces everyone involved to confront issues of privilege, racism, and emotional isolation.
